Sources, assumptions & limitations
Same rules, broader field. All 13 cycles use the league’s finalized rules, including polling and every bonus. The archive covers major declared contenders, both official VP nominees, additional ballot candidates, and verified polling scorers who never declared. It is not a census of every FEC filing or every public figure who endorsed a nominee. Small or poorly documented campaigns may be missing.
Why start in 1976? The FEC opened in 1975, and 1976 was the first presidential election with its primary matching-fund program. That gives us a consistent starting point for the league’s verified-filing launch rule. Earlier elections also used substantially different nomination processes. FEC history ↗
Older records are incomplete simulations. For 1976–2012, many vote and win inputs are documented contest subtotals, not reconstructed national totals. Missing caucus rounds, advisory-primary adjustments, polling pairs, endorsements, and speech eligibility remain unresolved. A numeric partial input contributes only its supported portion. Rankings sort these known subtotals; unequal evidence coverage can change the apparent order. The more extensively reconciled 2016–2024 records remain available for fuller scoring comparisons.
Different opportunities across eras. Even complete records would not have identical scoring opportunities: debate schedules, turnout, binding primaries, and caucus procedures changed. Incumbents often had no primary debates. Each election’s coverage note separates these real differences from missing research. The points are not adjusted to normalize one year against another.
Historical debate eligibility. For earlier cycles, this simulation treats the established major-party primary debate series in dated participant archives as the equivalent of today’s sanctioned debates. Separately identified forums are excluded. This is a modeling assumption; historical sanctioning procedures were not necessarily identical. Dated debate inventory ↗
Full-cycle ownership. Each cycle starts the day after the previous presidential election. We assume continuous ownership throughout that cycle, with no replacements. Pre-announcement polling can score; an exploratory committee alone cannot earn launch or first-campaign points. The actual 2028 league begins scoring after its draft, so a later draft would produce different totals.
Polling evidence. Each 3%, 10%, or 20% milestone requires two national nomination polls by different polling organizations, with fieldwork end dates no more than 30 days apart. A pair can prove multiple thresholds. Ordinary full-field polls may include undeclared candidates. General-election matchups, state polls, campaign-sponsored polls, straw polls, and hypothetical reduced or replacement fields are excluded. Different media sponsors of the same pollster do not create a second pollster.
Historical pollster list. This simulation uses Gallup, Pew (including its Times Mirror predecessor), CNN/ORC/SSRS, Fox, ABC/Washington Post, NBC/Wall Street Journal, NBC/SurveyMonkey, CBS/New York Times, CBS/YouGov, Economist/YouGov, Reuters/Ipsos, Quinnipiac, Monmouth, Marist, Suffolk/USA Today, Bloomberg/Selzer, Morning Consult, Rasmussen, and Public Policy Polling. The 2028 list remains to be agreed. Zero means no qualifying pair was found in the reviewed archive, not that a candidate never reached that level in any poll.
Roster-dependent bonus. For Hostile Takeover, every listed candidate is hypothetically rostered, with the pre-campaign home state recorded in the data. The same-party home-state rival must still be campaigning on the contest date. This lets us illustrate the bonus consistently; it is not a feasible single league draft. An actual four-manager draft could remove some of these five-point awards.
One qualifying contest. Use one binding nominating event per party and jurisdiction, excluding canceled events and nonbinding advisory votes. Examples include Nevada’s Republican caucus rather than its primary in 2024, and the separate New Hampshire Democratic delegate-selection process rather than its January 2024 advisory primary. These definitions can differ from headline state-win counts. Each affected record explains its adjustments.
Historical votes are approximate. Linked election authorities, the FEC, and published cycle summaries provide the inputs. Published aggregates may differ in their treatment of caucus rounds, ranked-choice ballots, write-ins, or late updates. We exclude identified nonqualifying events and never intentionally add multiple voting rounds. Vote totals are divided by 100,000, capped at 50 points, and rounded once to one decimal. The older records list the individual included contests. FEC totals are primary returns, not a complete primary-and-caucus census. California’s 2000 cross-party advisory ballots are excluded; specific gaps and uncertainties appear with the candidate; unverified inputs do not silently become zeroes.
Iowa 2020. Buttigieg receives the win and close-margin bonus using the Iowa Democratic Party’s certified state delegate equivalents. Sanders led the popular vote. Delegate equivalents identify the winner here; they are not counted as individual votes. For Suspended Animation, use the scored popular-vote round, including first choices in ranked-choice contests. Wins, close margins, and Actual Constituency use the contest’s selected winner metric.
Points belong to people. Biden’s 2024 primary points do not transfer to Harris. VP-only candidates earn no presidential launch points, though a documented pre-convention endorsement may qualify. Leaving both major parties stops new scoring; RFK Jr.’s 2024 record includes only his Democratic phase. Bonus eligibility is based on the evidence and historical interpretation shown in each breakdown.
